Walking

Walking in and around Ross-on-Wye, a National Landscape in the heart of Herefordshire, is a wonderful way to connect with nature, get fit and enjoy some stunning scenery. There are many guided and self-guided walks and there is also an annual Walking Festival every September organised by Walkers Are Welcome (visit walkinginross.co.uk for details), attracting walkers of all abilities and ages. You can enjoy a wide variety of routes, taking in viewpoints, historical monuments, riverside and woodland strolls as well as longer treks for the more adventurous.

Try the Ross-on-Wye Trails – a new app which allows you to take a self-guided tour of the town, taking in key landmarks including the Market House, The Prospect and the beautiful riverside. Download the app from Google Play (play.google.com) or from the App Store (www.apple.com/app-store).

There following are also popular walks starting in Ross-on-Wye (maps available from Tourist Information Centres at the Corn Exchange, 7 High Street or from Truffles Delicatessen or scan the QR codes):

Walk 1: The John Kyrle Circular Walk
One of the most popular walks in the town is named after Ross-on-Wye’s famous philanthropist, John Kyrle aka The Man of Ross. It begins in a layby by Wilton Bridge on the outskirts of the town – descend the steps down to the riverside and continue straight on with the river to your right. The route bends left to rise up onto a track high above on the sandstone cliff and the walk returns to town via St Mary’s Church.

This accessible family and buggy-friendly route is popular with users of electrically powered scooters, wheelchairs and people with children’s buggies. Starting at the Bandstand on Wye Street, enjoy a gentle stroll along the riverside towards the rowing club and across town, along the Town & Country Trail. Follow the route through St Mary’s churchyard down Church St, finally passing the Man of Ross Inn en route back to the Bandstand.
